What is the NCLEX?
The NCLEX exam was devised by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to determine whether nursing school graduates are qualified to practice nursing safely. The final hurdle to becoming a registered nurse is the NCLEX, which is the pinnacle of nursing students’ education.
The NCLEX is a computerized adaptive test (CAT), which means that the test is customized to each test-taker’s level based on how they perform during the actual exam. CAT technology makes the evaluation of nursing competence more effective and efficient.
The NCSBN is responsible for overseeing the administration of the NCLEX for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and the NCLEX for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

- Different Question Types on the NCLEX
The questions on the NCLEX have several formats. This implies that the computer changes the questions based on the test-taker’s performance. The NCLEX-RN consists of 74–145 questions. There are a total of 15 pre-test questions, but none of them impact test-takers’ final scores. The NCLEX-PN consists of between 85 and 205 questions, including 25 that are not graded. The exams have a time limit of five hours.
There are multiple types of questions. Some formats include:
Multiple choice
Fill in the blank.
Hot spot questions
Ordered response
Between 80 and 90 percent of the questions on the NCLEX are multiple-choice. For students who will take the NCLEX in 2023 or later, the Next Generation 2023 NCLEX updated its question formats and included two new ones: matrix, or grid, and cloze (dropdown).
- How to pass the NCLEX
Rather than using a percentage-based grade, the NCLEX uses a pass-fail grading system. The mechanism, however, is more complicated than it first appears.
The NCLEX uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT) to personalize each test-taker’s scores. Every time a question is asked, the computer decides whether you correctly answered the previous question in order to select the next one. The computer chooses questions that you have a 50% chance of correctly answering.
As you continue to answer the questions, the computer will apply one of the following three rules to determine whether you have passed or failed:
The 95% Confidence Interval Rule states that the test is stopped by the computer when it is 95% certain that you have passed or failed.
The computer will apply the maximum exam length rule if you are about to pass and force you to complete all of the questions. After you finish the test, the computer determines whether you passed or failed it.
According to the Run-Out-of-Time Rule, one of the following things will happen if there isn’t enough time and the computer can’t identify whether you passed or failed with a 95% certainty:
The computer will fail you if you don’t provide answers to the required number of questions.
If you answered the required number of questions, the computer will use the final ability estimate for the questions you answered to determine whether you passed or failed.
Keep in mind that the length of the exam does not predict whether you will pass or fail.
