NCLEX: What is it?
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed the NCLEX exam to assess whether nursing school graduates are qualified to practice nursing safely. The NCLEX, the pinnacle of nursing students’ education, is the last challenge to becoming a registered nurse.
The NCLEX is conducted through a computerized adaptive test (CAT), which means that the examination is tailored based on each test-taker’s performance during the actual exam to their level. CAT technology improves the effectiveness and efficiency of the assessment of nursing skills.
The NCSBN is in charge of regulating how the NCLEX for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN) and the NCLEX for practical nurses (NCLEX-PN) are administered.

- The Various NCLEX Question Types
There are various formats for the NCLEX questions. This suggests that the questions are modified by the computer in response to the test-taker’s performance. There are 74-145 questions on the NCLEX-RN. There are 15 pre-test questions in all, but none of them affect test takers’ final scores. Between 85 and 205 questions—including 25 that are not graded—make up the NCLEX-PN. Five hours are allotted for the exams.
There are various question types. Few formats are:
Multiple choice
Fill in the blank.
Hot spot questions
Ordered response
The NCLEX has between 80 and 90 percent multiple-choice questions. The Next Generation 2023 NCLEX revised its question formats and included two new ones: matrix, or grid, and cloze (dropdown), for students who will take the NCLEX in 2023 or later.
- Tips for passing the NCLEX
The NCLEX grades candidates using a pass-fail approach rather than a percentage-based system. But the technique is more confusing than it initially appears to be.
The NCLEX customizes each test-taker’s results using computerized adaptive testing (CAT). The computer selects the following question after determining if you correctly answered the one before it each time. The computer picks questions that you have a 50% chance of answering correctly.
The computer will use one of the following three rules as you continue to answer the questions to decide whether you have passed or failed:
According to the 95% Confidence Interval Rule, the computer will end the test when it is 95% confident that you have passed or failed.
If you are about to pass the exam, the computer will enforce the maximum exam duration limit and make you answer every question. The computer decides whether you passed or failed the test after you’ve finished it.
The Run-Out-of-Time Rule states that if there isn’t enough time and the computer can’t determine whether you passed or failed with a 95% certainty, one of the following things will occur:
If you don’t respond to the required number of questions, the computer will fail you.
The computer will use the final ability estimate for the questions you replied to decide whether you passed or failed if you answered the minimum amount of questions.
It should be noted that the length of the exam does not determine whether you will pass or fail.
